Australians love to dine and drink in the open air, that's obvious from the numbers of people you see crowding onto footpath dining areas at cafes, restaurants and hotels.

This passion for the al fresco lifestyle becomes a challenge for venue owners as winter approaches and the cooler temperatures send customers scurrying indoors leaving outdoor areas deserted and under utilised.

That's unless you are able to turn your open air space into cosy and inviting areas that will keep your customers happy but not break your budget.

Here are three of the latest ideas in outdoor heating on offer for operators to ward off the icy fingers of winter this year.

The Firestick is a new cutting edge alfresco heater that is not only efficient, but is a wonderful addition as a feature in outdoor dining. The Firestick is world leading in style, ambience, atmosphere and appearance. Designed and manufactured for the hospitality industry, specifically to create a magical setting. Fully certified and child safe.

Use all year round - as a heater in winter, and as a lantern in summer for ambience ant to create the perfect mood. There is a full range of accessories such as Stainless Steel bar tables built to attach to the heater, summer hats and all weather covers.

Case Study: The Opera Bar, Sydney

The project was to create ambiance, warm and make comfortable the clientele even encouraging them to sit outside and enjoy the fantastic waterside and iconic views offered by the Opera Bar during winter. Five Firestick heaters were the answer with the alfresco area being busier than ever on chilly nights.

Alfresco Spaces are introducing the latest US technology to their heater range in 2012 with the new 'directional quartz elements'. This is the second generation of Infrared radiant heating.

The new Architectural Series, Alfresco Heater, elements have a pure gold vapor applied to one side, which forces 93% of the radiant heat to the open face of the element creating 25% more heat than conventional quartz elements.

The new directional quartz element gives you concentrated useful heat energy. It avoids heat dissipation and interference and blocks unwanted radiation at the back of the heater.

Keverton Outdoor, the Melbourne based exclusive importers of Infratech infrared electric outdoor heaters, is excited to announce the arrival in Australia of the new Slimline range of heaters from Infratech USA.

This sleek, slimline range features the same powerful Infratube radiant heating element as the "W" series range, however has the significant advantage of an adjustable "T" slot bracket system for simple mounting on narrow pillars as well as wall and ceiling mounting.

As these units operate on a medium wave infrared beam, they are unaffected by breeze and are ideal for cafes, pubs, clubs and domestic installations.

Case Study: Bridge Hotel, Melbourne

Matt Mullins from Sandhill Road, the owners and operators of the recently refurbished Bridge Hotel in Melbourne chose the Infratech Slimline infrared heaters from Keverton Outdoor because of their sleek appearance and simplicity of installation.
Having used Keverton heaters in previous renovations, Matt felt that these heaters suited the design and decor of this venue and offered great energy savings by having the ability to operate on motion sensors for automatic on/off operation in their open outdoor areas.
