Sand Script from Designer Rugs

Caroline Baum worked with Senior Designer of Designer Rugs, Lia Pielli to create the 'Sand
Script' range. Together they created a digital colour map to interpret the photographs
(taken by Caroline) on the South Coast of New South Wales which eventually were made
into rugs.
Exploring local rock-shelf platforms, Caroline began photographing a colony of sea snails
making patterns in the sand as they foraged for food, "they were washed away at high tide
but regularly redrawn, like a mysterious ancient calligraphy renewed with constant variation
depending on interactions with algae, seasonal changes and weather."
Originally, these photographs were exhibited before being translated on to a range of silk
chiffon scarves and then eventually re-interpreted and woven into rugs. Swatches were
selected using 100% NZ wool and the more detailed images were made using silk detailing to
emphasise light rippling over sand and to provide a variation in texture and lustre. These
were then hand knotted in Nepal and woven into the 'Sand Script' rug series.
'Sand Script' includes 'Red Ripple' – hand knotted in Tibetan wool and silk, 'Orange
Tessellation' – hand knotted in Tibetan wool and 'Black Map' – hand knotted in Tibetan wool
and silk.
All three rugs can be custom-sized.
