New Shanghai to open restaurant in Charlestown

Growing restaurant brand and renowned dumpling house ‘New Shanghai’ has just announced its expansion into Charlestown, New South Wales.

Bringing together a tranquil yet decadent ‘Countryside’ theme, the New Shanghai Charlestown restaurant will be the second of the new generation New Shanghai restaurants – but the fourth location within the brand’s overall umbrella. The first of the New Shanghai restaurants, in Ashfield and Lemon Grove – traditional first generation Chinese restaurants - established the brand’s name forw authentic Shanghai soup dumplings, the making of which diners can view live in an in-store dumpling making theatre. The third addition, New Shanghai in Chatswood Chase, capitalised on the reputation of New Shanghai’s cuisine but dramatically transformed the dining surroundings to recreate a lively 1930’s Shanghai street setting – heralding a new and glamorous look for the brand.  The popularity of the Chatswood Chase restaurant and the success of this full, atmospheric dining experience prompted owner John Chen to expand on this concept. 

As with the Chatswood Chase restaurant, Charlestown New Shanghai looks to recreate a scene from Shanghai’s vibrant culinary culture that John grew up within. Featuring cobblestoned floors, hanging red lanterns, leave-twined walls and patterned umbrellas, the space is bestowed with the rich oriental beauty of Shanghai’s hinterland. A signature of all the New Shanghai restaurants, a live dumpling making theatre takes centre stage to offer diners a sneak peak into the action. A dazzling view of the Lake Macquarie harbour and the sparkling cityscape provides a dramatic backdrop.

In addition to the indulgent surrounds, the Charlestown New Shanghai restaurant will offer diners another opportunity to taste the dumplings and Shanghai-style cuisine that has made the restaurants predecessors so popular.

New Shanghai Charlestown is set to open around October.
