Inspiration for the Baccarat Pavilion, in Adelaide Casino, was drawn from pavilions and temples of China and South East Asia with the intention of enlivening a romantic nostalgia of far-a-way places. The design utilised scale, detail and a palette of luxurious materials to spark a striking contrast, creating an intimate and exotic room within a larger arena.

Located within the eritage listed Adelaide railway station, our client, Skycity, sought a memorable space that encourages the return patronage of clientele by imparting an enlivened and lasting impression. The Baccarat Pavilion was to be situated within an existing amorphous gaming floor and provide a captivating centre piece as well as an adaptable space to stage the popular card game.

Upon approach, bold visual drama intrigues guests, encouraging them to investigate further and participle in the festivities Baccarat has to offer. Utilising a change in level, almost alter-like, and a detailed embossed ceiling, an aspiration and hierarchy within the small gaming floor is created. The pavilion form echoes the symmetrical cruciform plan of the adjacent Marble Hall, the crowning centrepiece of the existing historical railway station building. Elevating the pavilion also provides a perception of privacy and security for players and guests.

Intricate laser cut screens and the contemporary chandeliers inherently reference the latticework of traditional temples as does the ceiling formation; a synergistic translation of a strongly expressed wooden temple roof structure. The level of detailing, down to the connection of elements, also authentically portrays the traditional mortise and tenon junctions typical of the temple typology.

The pavilion is not imposing but is certainly present. Warmth of lighting, luxuriously detailed finishes, pearlescent wallpaper, bronzed finishes, rich colour and timber veneers elevate the space into a realm of ‘otherworldly.’ This is further emphasised by the chandeliers, the jewels of the pavilion, floating overhead like festive lanterns.

Overall, the structure of the Baccarat Pavilion is un-complicated and clean-lined; a direct distillation of the essence of its precedent.
