The main inspiration behind the design of the hotel is its surrounding environment. The design aim was to create a highly sophisticated design which reflects the Chapel St Fashion and entertainment precinct and at the same time takes inspiration from more natural elements such as the Japanese garden within the hotel.

Elsie+Betty wanted to create a hotel that reflected both sophistication and luxury and they believe that is what made this hotel really stand out. As the hotel has many guests from the entertainment industry, the aim was to provide a design that was both professional and stylish.

Brintons Carpet

Brintons worked closely with the team from Elsie + Betty to pick designs utilising Brintons fabulous design archive to create a look specific for The Como. Drawing inspiration from Stacy Garcia designs, as well as the Brintons’ Hand Painted Sketches design catalogue, the on-trend colour palette was essential to lifting the sophistication and intrigue to this project.

Brintons

The modern graphic elements of the Japanese maple leaf in the rooms and the corridors create the surprise element for each visitor. The flow of the design in the corridor carpet, signage and room furnishings all mirror this iconic hotel’s high quality status.

The colour palette throughout the hotel is quite sophisticated and neutral with vibrant colours that ‘pop’ selected for the loose furniture and cushions. Within the rooms and the corridors, Elsie+Betty
injected a yellow colour in the ottomans and corridor feature graphic.
As a complimentary colour, they used teal as a highlight against the warm grey hues.

There were a number of materials which were used throughout the hotel, the majority of the joinery was in a timber veneer finish to create a warm residential feel while the predominantly painted white walls, crisp white stone benchtops and oversized feature mirrors open up the
space. As guests exit the lift they are welcomed by the feature ‘halo’ lights and a custom designed carpet in the lift lobby, creating a new experience. The corridors open up to an informal meeting and waiting area hub filled with a series of pendant lights and ottomans in various finishes and sizes against a custom designed graphic backdrop.

There are also three penthouses themed ‘Gem’, ‘Gold’ and ‘Pearl’ which have their own individual style, they are as follows:

The ‘Gems’ suite concept is bold, funky and fresh. Elsie+Betty designed a custom contemporary dandelion large-scale patterned carpet from Brintons. The furniture selected were also funky, with the bedhead and the ottomans having a diamond button detail. The feature
pendant lights are mini glass bottles. The suite is mostly on a white base (walls, joinery and tables) with bold splashes of yellow, purple and blue used in the cushions, chairs and small ottomans.

The concept for the ‘Gold’ suite is all about living grand, luxurious and exclusive. As the name suggests, the suite has a dark, rock’n’roll atmosphere which make the ‘gold’ features; such as the feature wallpaper, large square ottomans and designer floor lampstand
out all the more. At the upper level of the Como suite, a glamorous large bathing area has been refurbished with shimmering mosaic tiles which compliment the new simple, freestanding central stone bath. The extra attention to detail visible in the joinery units of this room also adds to the overall rich experience this room has to offer.

Aëon Illumination Glazen

Translated from the word ‘glacier’, the Aëon Illumination Glazen pendant light fitting combines a thick outer layer of glass with an internal chrome shade. The clean finish and crisp detail of the chrome, makes this an excellent accent light. Hang them in a cluster for a greater effect or individually to highlight an interior element.

Satelight

The ‘Pearl’ suite intends to reflect the quality of a pearl- simple and elegant. The use of light colours and subtle textures create a sophisticated and yet timeless quality. A much lighter shade of grey, with a subtle spotted pattern carpet has been selected for this room
with the furniture even receiving a lighted tone- all to capture a tranquil and calm atmosphere. The plush sofa and classic lounge armchair create an elegant and yet warm feel to the room. Upstairs, the spa area walls are covered in a ‘featherlike’ graphic and white satin mosaic tiles. Silver wallpaper adds to the cool atmosphere.
