The quaint town of Flinders on the Mornington Peninsula is nestled among soaring clifftops and offers spectacular views of Westernport Bay, Bass Strait and Phillip Island, 88 kilometres south of Melbourne. This environment inspired extensive renovations to the Flinders Hotel, enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.

Leading architecture and design firm, Rothelowman redeveloped and refurbished two of the hotel’s bars, the Deck Bar & Bistro and the Locals’ Bar & TAB.

The former seats 50 inside by the fireplace or 75 outside on the deck with the comfort of outdoor heaters and the capacity to protect guests from the mercurial weather conditions by simply closing the roof.

In their design for both bars, Rothelowman was determined to change the focus from the inside of the hotel to the views outside.

“By activating the corner edge and breaking open the internal nature of the space, we’ve been able to turn the focus outside,” said the architect on the project, Chris Exner.

Through the use of glass and wooden beams reminiscent of a coastal pier, Rothelowman’s design appeals to locals who often include surfers, families
with children and local tradesmen as well as Melbournians visiting from the coast on day trips or for the weekend.

“Through the architecture and interior finishes we created an unpretentious, inviting space that is at the same time sophisticated and modern and makes everyone feel welcome and at home,” Exner added.

The project’s interior designer, Andrew Wales said the colour palette used in the ‘light-filled interiors’ were inspired by ‘sandstone and the surrounding landscape.’

“The interiors, engaging natural tones of grey and chocolate brown together with honey coloured wooden floors, convey a sense of warmth, with accents of orange,” Wales said.

With its degustation menu, enviable coastal locale and invigorating renovation, the Flinders Hotel is bound to appeal to locals and latte-sipping out-of-towners alike.
