Honeysuckle Hotel incorporated the refurbishment of Lee Wharf C building which is one of two remaining federation style wharf sheds located along the prominent Honeysuckle Foreshore. These buildings were originally constructed between 1908 and 1910 to serve as general cargo sheds for the Port of Newcastle.

The adaptive reuse of this building needed to provide a high quality hotel and restaurant facility whilst still respecting the importance of a heritage building of State significance.

The use of stone, glass, steel and polished concrete create, modern clean lines which contrast with the rough textures of the existing building. This provides definite contrast, retaining and enhancing the integrity of the existing architectural features of the building. This use of glass coupled with the mezzanine floor emphasise the height and form of the space. The gunmetal grey steel and white walls used throughout is in sharp contrast to the original timber roof framing, timber columns and large operable timber doors which remain exposed to give the space a link to the buildings heritage.

An expressed steel sail structure on the deck extends the full length of the northern facade with a glass roof separating the new addition to the existing building ensuring the heritage facade is fully visible.

The design and construction required a sensitivity to ensure the buildings importance as a heritage item was not compromised, and aimed to complement the existing space using a modern design to express the historical character.

Patrons are now able to enjoy the hotel and restaurant facilities in a relaxed sophisticated environment in a unique location on Newcastle Harbour.

Noisebox Entertainment Systems designed and installed the audio visual elements inlcuding an Electro Voice audio system of EV Vari Intense EVI-15 speakers, EV EVID EV 3.2T and EV 4.2T surface mount speakers, and EV ZX1i surface mount speakers. Altronic ceiling speakers are used.

An EV CPS4.10 amplifiers is used to power the Vari Intense speakers, a Dynacord PCL 1245 amplifiers for the ZX1i speakers and Dynacord paramus amplifiers for the rest.

Digital management of the audio system is done with EV NetMax.

Panasonic Plasmas, NEC commercial LCDs, Toshiba LCDs and Samsung screens are all installed.
