Hopscotch Bar is located in South Perth in what used to be an old supermarket. The existing building is quite old and had rough additions made over many years. As a result, there were several large mismatched internal columns and uneven concrete slabs throughout. In addition, a recent storm had severely damaged the roof leaving it unstable, so considerable structural renovations were required before any internal works could begin.

As the area and building is well known by South Perth locals, Stiely Design was keen to keep the fabric of the building as close to the original as possible. Although the roof had to be replaced, the original brickwork walls were repaired and restored where possible. Signs of renovation and changes in the brick were left to preserve the history of the building.

With a new polished concrete floor and exposed brickwork, the acoustics needed to be addressed. The entire pitched roof was clad with black sound absorbing panels to ensure the space did not become uncomfortably loud for patrons. It was also important to be mindful of nearby residences.

Slick and modern materials and finishes were selected to create a contrast against the aged character of the building. A long zinc and copper island bar top runs the length of the venue. Sculptural light fixtures in a variety of sizes hang over the bar creating the main focal point. Walnut timber chairs and tables were added for warmth in the dining area, while upholstered chairs and lounges provide a great spot to sit and people watch out the large shopfront windows.
