The Moonee Valley Legends has undertaken an exciting refurbishment which has provided a breath of fresh air to this Melbourne racing favourite. With a spectacular outlook across the Melbourne city skyline and uninterrupted views over the Moonee Valley Racecourse, the position and orientation of Legends is unequalled – its interior decor however was calling out for ambience and warmth. Round 6 Architects worked closely with the Legends client to realise an exciting renovation that has added an atmosphere and refinement that has been well received by the community.

The interior design brief called for the creation of a more welcoming ambience that is both sophisticated and comfortable. A key consideration was to create a strong sense of uniformity throughout the venue, so as to link areas together that were formerly incoherent in both a physical and design sense. Perhaps the strongest feature in achieving this was the development of a custom carpet design that flows throughout each area, with variations in colour employed to create individual identification of each region whilst still keeping within the overall scheme. This, along with the use of warm Blackbutt timber cladding throughout the venue, has served to significantly unify all spaces.

The Bistro is now a warm and enticing version of its former self, with the richness of the timber panelling that dominates the space playing an integral part in its transformation. New mosaic tiles have given a fresh, textural quality to the bar front, with the removal of an old, clunky bulkhead and the refinement of bottle displays giving it a sophisticated edge. Timeworn ceiling tiles have made way for a new plasterboard ceiling while a more intimate dining zone has been created with the inclusion of a cluster of pendant lights to an existing drop-down bulkhead area. Mobile timber screens have also helped to break up the large expanse of the space.

Previously the Coffee Lounge served more as a transitional area rather than a real destination point. By injecting a sense of intimacy and mood, and by providing different seating options and zones, it now has a personality that is serving as a real attraction for diners and punters alike. Here the carpet is of the same pattern as in the Bistro, but in a colour way that is more vibrant and reflects the existing bar front tiles that were required to remain.

A new large drop down bulkhead creates an engaging area with pendant lights helping to deliver much needed ambience. New timber screening and curtains guide patrons through the space, while vintage photographs; previously kept hidden amongst a treasure trove of Moonee Valley memorabilia; now proudly give a nod to the Racing Club’s rich history.

The interior may now have character and identity, however it is still simple enough to let the marvellous Melbourne view remain the hero.

Perhaps the most dramatic of changes has occurred in what was once a gaming room lacking personality. What has been created is an environment that has raised the bar for gaming rooms in club’s throughout Victoria.

Custom Origami Lights

For the Moonee Valley Racing project, Satelight worked with Round 6 to design and manufacture Origami pendant lights. 20 custom light boxes were made out of plantation oak timber veneer board in two sizes . The CNC cut diamond shaped patterns are illuminated by the warm glow from the light globes.

Stark whites and unadorned surfaces have made way for an intense richness and liveliness. Here the overlaying of patterns and textures in the carpet really come into play, where they have been reflected on the ceiling in a combination of mirrored, metallic and wallpapered surfaces. These create a dazzling sense of movement and interest, whilst still maintaining a harmonious feel in the space. Glass pendant lights dotted throughout the ceiling provide a soft, warm glow, offsetting the rich gold and amber hues of the carpet perfectly. This gaming room could only be described as alluring, with an energy and vivacity that has been well received by patrons.

This renovation has breathed new life into the Moonee Valley Legends, with its fresh approach taking its facilities to a new level. Legends is now proving to be an exciting and inviting destination, with its warm and welcoming environment serving as a drawcard for patrons both new and old.

Custom Carpet

Round 6 Architects worked closely with Brintons Carpets to produce a custom design carpet which is used in four different colourways.
