Mr Tulk, a café set within the confounds of the State Library of Victoria, plays extensively on the reading room theme. It’s namesake, Augustus Henry Tulk was the library’s first Chief Librarian.

The long space with high-ceilings is flooded with light from a succession of elegantly arched windows and is divided into two areas. The large communal table at one end is surrounded by bentwood chairs hand dipped in red paint, bespoke reading lights, and a book

wall, whilst at the other end, copper clad benches and food display units define the takeaway and bar area.

This interior, encompassing huge, wall-mounted, anglepoise lamps and a central communal table with centrally mounted booklights, makes you feel as if spreading out the newspaper is really valuable study.
