In 2009, fire broke out at the Norman Hotel during the popular Friday lunchtime service. While there were no injuries to staff or patrons nor damage to the historic public bar, the pub was forced to close for a month for restoration.

KP Architects were responsible for the design.

The outdoor dining courtyard has been rebuilt with the same timber battened high level roofs whilst the open air garden dining has also been rebuilt maintaining its much loved garden atmosphere.

A new bar, known as ‘Norman’s Bar’, replaces the former bottleshop providing a dining/drinking area that opens onto the re-built courtyard and garden dining areas.

Beyond the dining area there is a sunken timber island bar with seating for casual drinks along rustic solid timber communal dry bars. This area of the bar can be opened up on nice days via large sliding windows on each side which maintains the indoor/outdoor atmosphere the Norman is famous for.

Behind the island bar is a more cosy lounge area.

Overall the design of ‘Norman’s bar’ invokes the casual rustic indoor/outdoor atmosphere of the existing pub whilst taking cues from the pub’s mascot bull for it’s detailed design (eg, cow hide wall paper and milk bottle chandeliers) and finishes to create an interesting and intimate space for drinks that has been missing from the Norman thus far.
