Woods Bagot has designed the Qantas Business Lounge at Perth Airport, which opened at the domestic terminal on Thursday August 27. Located in Terminal 4, the lounge will service 360 guests at a time, and is part of the airline’s expansion of the Qantas precinct at Perth Airport.

Woods Bagot Principal Wade Little said Qantas’ new model of port-specific design has enabled the creation of a unique user experience at the lounge.

“The business lounge at Perth Airport offers a quintessentially Perth experience in every detail.’ said Wade.“With a sense of place, interiors incorporate identifiable elements from Perth and the surrounding region. From Matilda Bay to Margaret River, the design takes its cues from the West Australian landscape.”

The Perth lounge will be the first domestic lounge to embrace a new design concept which balances port-specific themes with select elements from the common design DNA readily seen across the Qantas network.

Matilda Bay was used as inspiration for the finishes palette, with white washed oak timber alongside blue and grey hues creating a lighter feel in the scheme. Reminiscent of the tree-lined lake at Matilda Bay, oak dowel screens partition dining stations and work points, while fostering dappled light and maintaining sight lines throughout.

Perth Airport is heavily trafficked by premium and frequent travellers, predominately from the mining and resources sector. With that in mind, the design team also sought to reflect the red earth and iron ore deposits of the region via subtle visual cues. A terracotta feature wall wraps around the core of the floor plate, tying together the two key anchor points of the lounge.

A series of datum lines was introduced via joinery, wall cladding, dropped timber bulkheads and timber screens to create an interior landscape which breaks up the floor plate. Breaking down the linear, square floor plate, the space has been softened with curved walls and edges taking cues from Wave Rock, as well as the streamlined, aerodynamic forms of aviation design.

Woods Bagot interior designer Thomas Butler said the use of colour and materials used has a distinctly West Australian feel.

“Referential materials such as oak and terracotta instill an outdoors feel, reinforcing the open lifestyle synonymous with Perth. Access to natural daylight has been maintained, with the open façade drawing light into the core while maximising views out across the Qantas fleet.” said Tom.

The design creates a balance between intimate, private moments and communal, social gathering spaces. A variety of settings allow for a spectrum of uses from single pods to table configurations that seat 12 people.

The diversity of choice facilitates a variety of uses within the lounge, offering a business lounge with blurred dining, business and social settings. The casual dining area includes a made-to-order pizza bar and has the capacity to hold food carts or promotional pop-up stands. A new offering by Qantas, the Wine Bar transitions from a juice and coffee bar by day, to an elegant wine bar at night.

The Qantas Business Lounge in Perth is the latest project to cement Woods Bagot’s ongoing relationship with Qantas. Woods Bagot has also been responsible for club lounges across Australia as well as the Los Angeles (LAX) Business Lounge. Following the Perth terminal upgrade, Woods Bagot will continue to work closely with Qantas in Brisbane as part of a multimillion dollar upgrade to the airline’s domestic terminal. An expansion of Brisbane airport’s domestic Qantas terminal is expected to boost lounge space by some 30% in total.
