To create a beautiful, modern space that supported the contemporary Japanese dining concept without being highly themed.

Design a venue to expand over two levels in a very long and narrow space. Within this, encompass a cocktail bar, main dining room and private dining rooms.

The interior design takes its inspiration from the 1970s modernist Japanese salaryman’s deep obsession with Western culture. In Japan this was a period of economic growth and of trying to look, and be all things, Western. A time of big men, big deals and dark bars.  The design picks up on Japanese culture looking outwards to the West, not Westerners looking in on Japanese culture.

Features a mid-century palate: Japanese grass cloths, textured tiles handmade in Japan, honed green marbles, beautiful teak veneers, lots of blackened oak, cream leathers, bronze mirrors and bespoke made, mid century inspired, rice paper and teak wall lights and pendant lights

Ground floor dining room boasts stunning intimate 70s flashback design with black dining tables inset with bronze, timber-lined walls, a sweeping honed black marble communal table, and beautiful tatami ceiling panels with discreet illumination and wait tables made of teak veneer and inset with Japanese grass cloth.

Ground floor features a dramatic sweeping marble dining counter and overlooks a spectacular sushi bar and robatayaki.

Downstairs showcases an expansive bar clad in hand made orange and yellow thickly glazed bricks, a double height shochu library and a secondary wine wall, leather banquettes, DJ booth and sliding glass entry onto an outdoor courtyard.

Outdoor courtyard features an exposed brick wall spanning the two floors and Japanese landscaping with a private traditional Japanese garden for entertaining.

Two private dining rooms: walls feature raised timber tatami pattern, lined in Japanese grass cloth – one is open to the private outdoor courtyard with Japanese landscaping.

The stairs to the bar are illuminated in neon red with our branded hand painted traditionally inspired, Sake tattooed girl.

The designer’s approach returns to using materials with integrity. Paring back our use to a simple and beautiful palette of lasting ingredients with traditional craftsmanship.
