The kiosk is located between large retail anchor tenants at Melton’s recently refurbished Woodgrove Shopping Centre, therefore making the largest impact on such a major thoroughfare was pivotal in consideration of the design.

Hot Black Interiors’ purpose was to enlist a modern take on the traditional ‘nautical’ theme, using a unique variety of finishes and details to suit the environment in which the café is positioned.

There was ongoing communication and collaboration with Mentes Shopfitting, who was the shopfitter on the project, to ensure the end result met initial expectations.

A main consideration of the overall design was the tenancy restrictions based on the height barrier – it was essential to ensure that the line of sight to the major adjacent tenancies was not impeded on in any way.
Due to the proximity of the tenancy base building tile, it was also a necessary consideration to assimilate our materials to suit the surrounding finishes. By incorporating the tile into the design, there is fluidity between the kiosk and the thoroughfare that surrounds its perimeter.

To take full advantage of the inevitable foot traffic between the major adjacent tenancies, careful planning of the seating layout explored several options to maximize patron seating.

In the selection of materials, items were nominated for their directional flow and wayfinding capabilities, in consideration of the 360 degree access from all sides of the kiosk. It was crucial to ensure all facets of the kiosk were somehow amplified and thus, the detail and overall combination of materials dictated this.

Initially, the branding was the source of inspiration for the colour scheme, once again exploring the nautical aspect with a fresh, urban flavour.

When it comes to identifying one element that really ties the concept together, it’s the rope, literally!! Using identifiable materials with tactile details was a major inspiration, for patrons to be immersed in a tangible café experience rather than a merely visual one.

One bespoke light fitting for the signage plinth signposting the kiosk was specified. Due to the absence of any other lighting selection, the unique rope light with an exposed Edison bulb was designed to really elevate the brand and also to identify with the Sandrock kiosk.

Special features include the marine rope detail, split faced bricked detail combined with the feature Quinta tiles, the bespoke timber table tops and the limestone plinth detail.
