design: The Buchan Group

The new Sheraton Melbourne Hotel is an expression of understated elegance, from the discreet Little Collins Street entry, to every detail of the 174 guest rooms. The Buchan Group is the architect and interior designer of this striking 32-storey wavelinear form that is the 27 Little Collins Street development.

The hotel offers 14 levels of thoughtful luxury reminiscent of the boutique hotels of Paris. The floors above accommodate a range of independent apartments, residences and penthouses. It expresses the strong Sheraton brand while creating the ambience of a boutique hotel in the European tradition.

Entry to the hotel, residences and penthouses is from the street, while a separate entry from Coates Lane provides dedicated apartment access. The concierge is located at street level, as well as two retail tenancies.

A grand staircase leads to Level 1 and links guest services and public spaces. Dominated by a custom-designed chandelier, the staircase is an introduction to the 5-star quality of the hotel and takes guests to reception, the lobby, lounge and restaurant. Although spacious, there is nevertheless a sense of intimacy here, with the Reception desk situated close to the point of arrival to offer a warm and immediate welcome. The Lobby features soft leather chairs grouped as mini lounges, and there is a guest lounge beyond where guests can order from the light-filled French-inspired restaurant and adjacent bar.

Conference facilities and meeting rooms are located on Level 2 and enjoy views over Coates Lane and Little Collins Street. Spaces are flexible, meeting the needs of both small and large groups. The Grand Ballroom on this level can accommodate 250 people, but can also be reconfigured into smaller spaces as required.  Unusually for a city hotel, the ballroom enjoys abundant natural light when in use in daytime.

On Level 3, The Spa, heated lap pool and Jacuzzi pampers guests, while the adjacent gym caters for the fitness-conscious. The outdoor Terrace Bar on this level overlooks Little Collins Street and provides a rooftop experience for guests, residents and the public.

Guest rooms commence on Level 3 and are an expression of plush, contemporary comfort – both haven and  indulgence.  Marble bathrooms are finely detailed and are separated from the main room by large windows fitted with electronically retractable blinds for privacy.  Many rooms enjoy views of the city, the nearby Treasury Gardens and the MCG.

Opened in April 2014, the Sheraton Melbourne Hotel delivers a luxury boutique hotel experience and at the same time integrates well with the residential uses of the site. With its slim street profile and low-key entry, it is a new discovery among Melbourne’s famous narrow streets and laneways.
