The new design of Single Origin – a long time Surry Hills favourite for coffee aficionados from locals to those from afar, was to give the store a cleaner aesthetic to assist in their presentation of some serious food, but required a fun element to reflect the quirky side of the business.
The Client’s brief was to revitalise the store without alienating their loyal customers. The space had not been touched in the nine years since it opened with the owner’s responsible for the original fit-out. The store was close to their hearts but they knew it needed a lift.
The Client has always had close ties with street artists, and that was to remain a changing element within the space. With ‘art series’ blends of coffees being presented in a new package designed by these street artists four times a year, a part of the very small site was to help reinforce this retail element of the business. The use of an aluminium cladding profile to represent a shipping container highlights Single Origin’s strong connections with the origins and ethical trading of beans.
Other clever detailing included the overhead shelving supports wrapped in leather bicycle handle straps to reflect some of the clientele that commute to the area by bike.
The end result was a sophisticated revamp with a twist for this fun and left-of-the-middle brand that will last for at least another nine years. Excellence is achieved here through creative thought and brand alignment.
