The Story Bridge Hotel is one of Brisbane’s iconic pubs and a favourite amongst locals since its establishment in the late 1800’s. Over time, the hotel has seen numerous additions and renovations with Deery’s Restaurant and Courtyard being the latest areas to receive a much-needed revamp.

Complemented by a neutral palette and natural materials, the new fitout of Deery’s Restaurant has a subdued and sophisticated feel with hints to its former version.

The adjacent Courtyard Bar however brings a more relaxed and social vibe to the hotel. The extension involved enclosing the existing courtyard - shielding its patrons from the car park and the elements yet maintaining the courtyard feel. Brick walls, timber trusses and timber-framed windows are featured to create a cohesion with the restaurant but the injection of colour through the encaustic floor tiles creates a fun atmosphere.

Brand + Slater Architects were charged with the design of the refurbishment and from the beginning, it was clear that the interior design approach was to be sensitive to the federation-style building.

This resulted in retaining and restoring many existing features, including the original bar and timber flooring, with new elements sympathetic to the original building fabric. A portion of the existing ceiling was removed to unveil the original timber trusses which immediately produced grandeur to a space that was previously restricted by a low ceiling height.

An eclectic array of furniture paired with greenery throughout reinforces the courtyard style and adds to the intended comfortable ambiance.
