The newly refurbished South Melbourne pub, ‘The Fleece’, has undergone a sensational facelift with a main sports bar that’s decked out with plasma screens for big sporting matches, cosy lounge spaces and an upstairs rooftop deck and restaurant area, replete with its own fireplace.

Pulse AV were asked to design, supply and install a comprehensive audio visual system for the entire venue which is divided into five separate audio zones: Bistro, Main Bar & Lounge, Function Area 1, Function Area 2 and Function Area 3.

Wall-mounted DBX ZC-8 keypads located behind the bars are used to control the volume level and audio source in each zone. Each zone is capable of having its own audio source and volume level regardless of what is being heard in any other zone.

JBL Control series speakers have been specified throughout the entire venue. A combination of Control24 and Control26 in-ceiling speakers are used throughout the entire venue. These speakers feature speaker ‘back-cans’ which improve the mid-range audio and reduce the audio spill into adjacent audio zones. Weatherproof surface-mount Control25AV speakers are included for Function Area 3, while compact JBL 8124 in-ceiling speakers are used in the toilets, corridors and upstairs foyer area. Cabling for future subwoofers is included in the Main Bar and Function Area 1 and 2.

Panasonic 50” and 42” commercial plasma screens are installed into the Main Bar, with a Panasonic video projector and Image Premium motorised screen in Function Area 2. Cabling is included for a future outdoor LCD screen in Function Area 3.

box and DVD player have been included. Allowances have been made for the connection of Foxtel, as well as Nightlife Music Video to allow marketing or advertising throughout the venue. Future sources and displays may also be connected to the system.

A wall mounted controller located in the upstairs bar controls the power and source control for the upstairs Function Area 2 projector, as well as raising and lowering the projection screen. Audio connection points are included in Function Areas 1 & 2 and are capable of having a CD player, laptop or Ipod connected to them.

A wireless microphone is available for use in Function Area 2, and has a separate volume controller located in the upstairs bar.

The installed system provides high-quality audio and video throughout the venue, while being extremely easy to use. The system is capable of being expanded at a later date, should the need arise.

“The trusty combination of JBL, Crown and DBX ensure that the system sounds great and is extremely easy to use,” commented Adam Dullens of Pulse Audio Visual. “We will specify this type of setup for most venues and everyone is always really happy with the sound quality and simple system operation.

“The audio keypads behind the bars allow quick easy system adjustments by the staff without having to leave the room, so they can hear exactly what they are doing.”

In order to keep the owners and managers happy, a ‘maximum’ allowable audio level is set for the room. Once this is set, the staff cannot exceed this volume level, ensuring an appropriate audio level for the room. This also eliminates speakers being damaged by over-enthusiastic staff exceeding suitable volume levels!
