Following years of financial uncertainty and a bleak looking future, a new light shone for both Roselands Bowling Club and Punchbowl Ex-Services and Community Club with their future being secured after amalgamation with Mingara Leisure Group in May 2009. Without the amalgamation, the community in Punchbowl and surrounding areas would have not only lost their clubhouse but several community services as well.

To this end a much-needed, brand new clubhouse has been built at the Roselands site. The construction of new facilities from the ground up these days is a rare opportunity within the club industry.

Graphite Architects were appointed for the design and saw this as an opportunity to mould the interior spaces from the external building form through careful planning and selection of materials that would translate both internally and externally. The interior and exterior design were seen to be integral from the outset.

The site is located between a residential precinct on one side and Centro shopping Centre on the other. The scale and form of the building with low pitched tiered roof lines and extended eaves create a visually inviting but non-institutional building form. It sits comfortably between these two zones, being sympathetic to the language of the neighbouring houses, whilst still establishing a presence as a community building.

The new club features a casual dining restaurant, Mazi, a lounge area with ambient fireplace; outdoor dining and entertainment areas; indoor and outdoor gaming areas, a community room complete with bar and two new bowling greens.

The brief was to create “The Lantern Club”: a new light in the community, a landmark, a warm comfortable and inviting place. Throughout history the lantern has been represented in many cultures in various physical and abstract forms. Graphite Architects saw it as “a warm glow in the dark” to entice the senses. The interior of the Lantern Club is an enticing and spacious design, with a focus on filtered light, both natural and artificial.

The design is influenced by current trends blended with classic sophistication. The edges of interior zones are blurred through visual layering and continuous views throughout the club offering a seamless transition through the spaces. Natural materials rich in texture, colour and contrast including stone, facebrick, splitface block selected for the building envelope also form the finished faces of the interior spaces. Earthy robust materials are contrasted with a layering of softer suspended materials and fittings. At night the finishes inside come to life as the mood changes to a warm glow, rich in atmosphere, created by custom designed lighting.

Planting used both as a backdrop and as internal ornamentation injects a natural subtle infusion of colour and life to the interior. Soft furnishings and tactile finishes with contrasts in texture, colour, sheen and patterning have all been carefully juxtaposed to create drama and interest.
For the Lantern Club gaming and lounge area, Whitecliffe Imports supplied a high quality bespoke HTW AP900 with 550 gram filz backing carpet was selected by client. AP 900 carpet is 100% nylon that has the appearance of a more traditional carpet but is able to withstand upward of 1,000 feet per hour including wheel chairs.

For bowlers lounge area, the most durable quality bespoke HTW Arcade 550gram filz backing carpet was also specified. It performs extremely well under very heavy foot traffic and the wear and tear associated with these areas. ‘Arcade’ unique quality has a very short pile height which enables very high resolution of colour and pattern when printed.

The 550gram filz underlay provides more comfort under foot, is a self-adhered backing than can be direct-stuck to the floor, rather than a traditional dual bond method. Also this backing enhances the longevity and appearance of the installed carpet and reduces the installation costs for this carpet.

Whitecliffe Imports manufactured 1,890 sqm of HTW carpet for the new Lantern Club site and provided project management that includes installation, sampling process, and access to HTW design archives.
