The exisiting site was once purchased/owned by Jonathan Butterworth in 1894, who then in 1895 established the Hay & Bag store, which led to the creation of an industrial warehouse which was ideal for this project.

The programme was a two level space, within that plan Rob Marshall wanted a bar upstairs which was to have brasserie look and included a more formal dining area with soft furnishings. The bar downstairs has a more relaxed ambience with high top tables and open spaces, which includes open fireplaces and daybeds.

The design concept is reinforced by the use of cement flooring, raw brick, exsposed timber beams and industrial lighting.

The initial building colours helped Rob Marshall to decide on the colour scheme and textures of the project. The initial brief was to be a vintage Ralph Lauren inspired.

The choice of lighting was industrial, however the detail and craftmanship of the particular lighting that was used reinforced the design concept.

Special design features include the use of cobblestone in the downstairs courtyard, the sign writing which has an aged/distressed finish, explaining the history of the site which is located on the brickwork near the enterance, and the ten-piece design Herve chandelier from Paris hanging from the main stairwell.

“The idea was to create a relaxed inviting urban space, that the client would not feel too over or under dressed to utilise,” explained Rob Marshall.
