The Garden
742 Newcastle Street, Leederville, WA
08 9202 8282

The Garden is the first stage of the redevelopment of the historic Leederville Hotel.

Occupying the space where the hotel’s band room once stood, the new venue has been built from scratch to create an amazing space with a range of eating areas. Take a seat in one of the booths or at one of the more traditional tables or pull up a pew at one of the high bars located around the garden. The grassed area is perfect for sunny days, letting diners stretch out in the sunshine as they graze on tapas.

If you’re after something a little more formal with table service, there’s a

spectacular-looking enclosed area, known as The Greenhouse, with high wooden tables and stools and completely enclosed in glass.

The design response is completely unique to the space; a celebration of the existing building fabric with infusions of robust finishes and quirky touches of colour that will continue to age and evolve with the venue over time. The design has a strong focus on using inexpensive and readily available materials in unusual ways to create design statements throughout the venue.

The Garden and neighbouring Leederville Hotel has one of the most sophisticated yet easy to use audio/visual systems in a Perth venue.

Comprising of a large BSS Soundweb network as the core of the audio system (56 input / 56 output with redundant networks in place), Barco and Extron video processing / switching with Crestron used for overall control and automation.

Although The Garden is a separate venue, the AV systems of both The Leederville Hotel and The Garden are coherently integrated. Any audio or HD-video source can be routed anywhere – they can even decide which DJ gets played in the toilets if they wish!

After many months of trials and listening tests, it was decided to go with a combined Electro-Voice / RCF audio system. The winner? The Electro-Voice ZX1 series as they are fantastic waterproof boxes without the ‘plastic cabinet’ sound. Small 12” RCF subs were also used, with Electro-Voice amplification all round.

Being such a complex system, with many audio and HD-video sources changing throughout the day and night, a simple yet powerful control system was needed. As a result a Crestron control solution with colour touch screens, web and iPhone-based control was implemented.

"Being a programmer myself, I designed and programmed the entire control and AV system from the ground up – starting with a small pilot system in the Leederville (simple Soundweb and Crestron interconnection) moving up to a complete system that looks after everything from changing Foxtel channels, to turning the heaters on and off in The Garden," remarked Tim Bowyer, Production Manager at the venue.

Lighting included TLS Productions' custom RGB LED fixtures throughout as well as their custom dimming systems and control. Clipsal C-Bus across the board.
