Helm Bar’s ‘Lower Deck’ which opened in the winter months is about to become one of Darling Harbour's greatest assets as the summer months arrive.

Situated directly beside the existing Helm Bar & Bistro on the Cockle Bay waterfront, the Helm team has delivered the same sense of vibrancy and casual elegance to the table with this brand-new offering.

An elegant, yet modern design theme runs throughout the two distinct spaces. The Lower Deck outdoor area (with a capacity for up to 150 people) brings together ample outdoor seating, large umbrellas and nautical style bollards to make maximum use of the dazzling seaside outdoor setting. Upstairs (with a capacity of 400), gleaming glass facades and timber lend to a nautical feel that is both innovative and fresh.

Helm Bar incorporates a cohesive nautical design to create harmony between the venues interior and its coveted seaside location. The distinctive yet stylishly executed ocean theme runs throughout the venue, with renowned architect Tony Legge utilizing natural wood and rich blue to create an elegant yet relaxed feel.

Gleaming glass facades maximize the abundance of natural light and ensure unimpeded views of the calm Cockle Bay waters. The resulting feel is innovative and fresh, yet flexible enough to accommodate Helm’s ever-changing atmosphere.

Celmec Heaters

Celmec International’s Heatray Electric Radiant Heating (ERH) Panels provide superior close proximity heating. The ERH Panels create comfortable radiant warmth that directly heats people and objects in its path. The ERH Panels are suitable for low ceiling / structure applications, can be grouped for zone control and feature HIGH/LOW heat options for comfort control and energy savings.

The lighting around the bollards and in the umbrellas is from LPA Lighting Specialists whilst the umbrellas themselves come from Designer Shade Solutions who also fitted the Heat Strip heaters in the umbrellas.

General Manager of Helm Bar, Daniel Altshuler, says: “The concept of this new bar was to create a beer garden where people can meet to dine and drink while enjoying the amazing outlook. It has been a lot of work, but I am ecstatic with the finished product. Our next step is to get locking down entertainment to sweeten the deal.”

The upper deck of Helm Bar has also had a freshen up re-emerging as a sleek and stylish new bar and restaurant with help from Jeff Patterson from Redesign Consulting. The idea was to give the space more light and shade, with warmer colours to make it more inviting. All of the furniture is done by James Richardson furniture. The upstairs heaters are by Celmec Heat Rays.

Saltec supplied and installed a new audio system for the Lower Deck that comprised of eight Electrovoice EVID 3.2 wall mount speakers, a DBX ZC2 wall mount volume control panel and a DBX ZC9 wall mount source select panel.

Saltec also upgraded the audio system in the Upper Deck with eight Electrovoice EVID 6.2 wall mount speakers and two Dynacord CPS2.6 dual channel amplifiers.

Electrovoice EVID 3.2

The EVID 3.2 produces sound that defies its small size. It is loaded with dual, 3.5“, low-frequency drivers and a .75“, Ti-direct radiator. Its unobtrusive profile is ideal for background music and paging support.
