An Interview with Alexa Nice, Cloudland Interior Designer

Young and spritely with the attitude and hair to match, Alexa Nice was “poached”, by Raphael Bickle, to join the Cloudland design team shortly after finding her feet at one of Australia's largest architectural firms.

Alongside Head Designer, Nic Brunner, as Cloudland's Interior Designer, Alexa was involved in all stages of the Cloudland design process – from conceptual design, to design development, through to final construction.

"I absolutely loved the job. I was not restricted by general design constraints and limitations such as opinions and budgets. I worked with a unique team of designers, and highly skilled builders, and together we were able to push the boundaries of design,” Alexa says.

Cloudland Q&A with Alexa

What is your favourite space of the venue?
The Peacock Lounge, because it is a space of rich contrast. The brass peacock decals, hand faceted crystals, peacock lamps, embroidered silk upholstered panels in the shape of peacock feathers, and opulent wallpaper ooze pure, over-the-top decadence and attention to detail.

What specific features differentiate Cloudland from any other space you have experienced around the world?
Cloudland’s mezzanine teems amid unique beauty, with the luxurious lounge area contrasting dramatically to the outdoorsy ground level. On one side of the mezzanine an illuminated patent black and white leather lounge is complemented with colourful couture silk cushions, and surrounded by embroidered silk wall panelling and hand made wall papers; while on the opposite side the Crystal Booths sit, crafted from rich flocked fabrics blended with metallic leather, highlighted by hand faceted crystals in the ceiling recesses – which bounce light onto the wallpaper – and an oversized solid crystal set into the table top.

Where do you feel most comfortable in Cloudland?
The Water Lounges and Onion Booths exude pure comfort. The textured upholstery, hand made timber ball screening, and sheer curtains blended with flowing water and rich planting create an area which literally brings the outdoors inside.

What colours jump out at you when you walk through the front door?
Those that emanate from the natural materials: rich coppers, bronzes, velvety browns, luscious greens and beautiful pinks from the rose petals, which cover the ceiling of the marble bar. As well as the soft palette of baby pinks, mustard and sorbet orange that filters through the white wire booths.

When you hear the word Cloudland what are the first words that come to mind?
The Elements. Unique. Customised.

What inspires you and your designs?
People, music, travel, and the drive to create an experience that people can be a part of.
