Brintons at The Botanical

The Botanical Hotel in South Yarra, affectionately known as The Bot, is regarded by many as Melbourne's first gastro pub and one of the city's most iconic venues. Ideally located opposite Melbourne's bucolic Botanic Gardens, The Botanical has long been a favourite venue for Melburnians and interstate visitors who seek out its' top quality food, relaxing bar and excellent people-watching position.

The client brief & creative design approach
The current owners, Colonial Leisure Group, purchased The Botanical in 2009 with plans to refurbish the entire venue. They engaged renowned Melbourne architects WEBB+ to reinvent and transform the interior spaces, trusting them with an open brief. Simon Webb says, " The owners wanted to breathe vitality back into the iconic venue and so our design ethos was to reinterpret the relationship between the
different spaces and create a timeless interior design that was neither funky nor too fashionable".

The project had an ultra-fast, five-month turnaround time. The WEBB+ design team wanted a bespoke feel for the restaurant carpet and engaged Brintons, confident they could create a stunning bespoke solution within the tight timeframe. Adrian Downes, Design Director at WEBB+, looked to Brintons exclusive design collections for inspiration and found the Stacy Garcia Nouveau Boho range hit the mark perfectly with respect to pattern, scale and colour. The chosen design features distinctive painterly spheres set in an over-scaled organic pattern. The textured background to the design was a key determinant for Adrian's choice as it provided the classic vintage feel he required for the space.

Services provided by Brintons
Brintons worked closely with Webb+ to understand the pattern scale for the area and provided flooded floorplans, handtrials and colour tufts for client approval as well as weave planning, installation plans and technical assistance to the installers.

Brintons manufactured woven Axminster carpet that was installed flush with the surrounding hard flooring to provide a fitted rug effect.

Client reaction
" I wanted the heroes of the restaurant space to be the artwork, the carpet and the people and looking at the finished result I believe that's exactly what we've achieved. When I saw the Brintons Stacy Garcia design I felt it was a perfect match for our chosen refurbishment palette, no changes required. Additionally from experience I knew that Brintons have a professional and responsive design service matched by the quality production required for this component of the project".
Adrian Downes, Design Director at WEBB+

Brintons reaction

"It's always great when a designer chooses a pattern from one of our bespoke collections and this project shows that even with strict time constraints customers don't need to think that stock carpet is their only option. The use of the carpet in The Botanical restaurant is a great example of how impactful patterned carpet can be as an interior design tool".
