The owners of the award winning Subiaco Hotel in Perth have opened the latest addition to the WA restaurant scene at Mirvac's $230 million Mandurah development The Point – M on the Point.

Since splashing onto the Mandurah waterfront, this robust, multi-million dollar venue is making quite an impression on the local dining scene. Run by the Monaghan family of Perth's popular Subiaco Hotel, M on the Point makes a point of catering to all occasions, with both casual and formal dining areas, two well-stocked bars, and an enormous alfresco area that puts you right on the water's edge.

Scott Wilson Design was responsible for the design of the venue having taken into account the casual, leisurely nature of Mandurah.

“Looking back over this project, the most important aspect - whether it was the fit out or the furniture - is the consideration of materials,” explained Scott Wilson. “Materials were not selected on aesthetics alone as durability, longevity and maintenance was equally as important. This encompassing approach is something that is often missing in commercial projects such as these.”

Scott’s inspiration was the history of Mandurah and this can be seen in the rawness of aged timber, rusted steel, painted marine craft and infrastructure that has survived the years through
repeated coats of paint. Weathered fibro, blackened copper and corroded aluminium all inspire.

”The starting point with the design was with the materials and then working the designs to bring out the best attributes,” said Scott. “We developed a palette of materials that met our selection criteria and that we all sensed would work on an aesthetic level, so then it was a matter of developing an integrated

design. We endeavored - and succeeded I believe - in addressing all the practical aspects which are too often overlooked in these operations. Things like the steel collars around the columns and the kicker details around the bars.”

With many of the furniture and fixtures, there is this boldness in scale with refinement in detailing and construction. There is attention to how and why things go together.

Scott has succeeded in not doing the literal ‘marine inspired’ interior instead occasionally drawing inspiration from 1950’s ocean liners and ferry passenger terminals reinterpreting the aesthetic through the knowledge of modern manufacturing methodologies. For example, the copper and fibre glass lanterns could have been resurrected from the grand dining room of a passenger liner.

“We wanted a warm inviting atmosphere and something that spoke of permanency,” he said. “It had to be practical; no nonsense and timeless. I wanted elements that would evoke a sense of connection with the water but falling short of the port holes and crab pots look!”

Sustainability was an important issue for Scott and so the majority of items used were built in WA cutting down the transport. Eighty year old recycled French oak from brandy distillery vats was used, wooden finishes are hand oiled meaning low toxicity and easy maintenance.

“All the designs have longevity in both the material and aesthetic context....something often over looked in the ‘5 year commercial gut it out re-do it‘ model,” commented Scott.

DigiPage Zone Control System - Main Station

The AMIS Digipage is a 3 rack unit multizone paging and source selection system that offers unprecedented flexibility for multizone paging and source routing applications. 6 program inputs and one dedicated local mic/line input are available to each of 8 zone outputs.

With LED indication for program/local input selection, zone output level, paging enable/disable and network busy, the DigiPage provides extensive status indication to the user. The DigiPage is also expandable to 16 zones via a simple link cable to a second unit. Paging stations are available in 8 or 16 zone models allowing paging into any individual zone, any combination of zones or All Call. Remote control panels are also available, allowing source selection and volume control from within each remote zone.

Both paging stations and remote control panels connect via inexpensive and industry standard CAT5 cable network. An overall priority input is also provided for emergency or evacuation signals. The Digipage is an incredibly versatile and well featured product that provides a simple solution to the complex applications of multizone paging and source routing.
